The United Kingdom is located in North West Europe. It comprises the island of Britain, and Northern Ireland, as well as numerous smaller islands in the surrounding seas. The United Kingdom is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea and the North Sea. It is connected to France by the Channel Tunnel. The UK has  a temperate climate moderated by the Gulf  Stream. The weather is very changeable and unpredictable. Winters are cold and wet with occassional snow. Summers are generally warm with frequent showers.   

The United Kingdom is a consititutional democary, and is a member of the European Union. The population is 60.1 million. The capital city is London, and major cities include Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The UK has the 18th highest GDP in the world at $30,436, and also the 18th highest HDI. The currency is the pound sterling. The UK is officially Christian (Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist) 71.6%, Muslim 2.7%, Hindu 1%, other 1.6%, unspecified or none 23.1%.
